Sometimes, we can see clashes between rank in policy over surprisingly small matters in the military. But while authority does matter, effective leaders can think of multiple reasons not to abuse it when they’re in the wrong. Could your head stay cool and respectful?

Someone you outrank notices you’re out of uniform. Response?
- I admire their guts, but the look in my eyes tells them what a risk they’re taking
- I pull rank in front of everyone and tell them to stand at attention when talking to me
- I fix what’s wrong, but I get ready to tell them to address me as “sir” if they still give me attitude
- I don’t undermine their leadership in front of the enlisted, but I talk to them in private later
