On a darker note, German Nazis infamously tattooed their concentration camp prisoners during World War II. The numbers were used to identify them and help guards differentiate between the thousands of prisoners. Those who survived the camps were, unfortunately, left with a lifelong reminder of their captivity due to these tattoos.
