Coastal tribes in Papau New Guinea use tattoos as an indicator of age. Traditionally, tribe members receive a tattoo each year after their fifth birthday. They begin by receiving a large “V” tattooed below their collar bone, but over the years, it is meant to take the shape of a Bird of Paradise.
