In 1851, Olive Ann Oatman and her family were traveling through modern-day Arizona when her parents were killed by a group of Native Americans. Olive and her sister were taken captive by the tribe, and later given tattoos on their faces as part of a religious ritual. She survived but with an everlasting reminder of her capture.
