This photo, taken on July 29, is believed to be the last picture of the baseball idol known as “The Sultan of Swat.” He died just a couple of weeks later.
The beloved athlete’s body lay in state at Yankee Stadium for two days, and tens of thousands of people came to pay their last respects.
