Kim Jong Il
Died at 70 (December 17, 2011)

Kim Jong Il was the supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Immensely secretive and reclusive, this photo is from the last time he made a public appearance before his death suspected heart attack.
His third son, and the country’s current leader, Kim Jong Un is pictured behind him on the escalator.
After Kim Jong Il’s death, he was named “Eternal General Secretary” and “Eternal Chairman of the National Defense Commission.” Both positions require a huge time commitment — eternity.
