Urban Legends That Turned Out To Be Real

It’s Raining Whale?!

While nobody believed this story, it was actually true. On November 9, 1970, a beached sperm whale was found on the coast in Florence, Oregon. At the time, the beach was under the jurisdiction of the Oregon Highway Division, who consulted with the U.S. Navy, and decided that the best way to dispose of the whale’s carcass was to get rid of it in the same way that they would get rid of a boulder.

They figured that they would use dynamite to blow up the whale and the carnage would be small enough to be picked up to clean the area. The endeavor failed, however, after the initial explosion caused bits of the whale to rain over building and parking lots in neighboring cities. Not even the whole whale blew up.
