Always Check the Mattress
This case has actually happened multiple times to multiple people. Usually vacationing couples who stay at motels are the unfortunate victims of these disturbing scenarios. In one case from 2003, a man was staying in a Kansas City motel and complained about the foul odor in his room.
The hotel management said nothing could be done and after three nights of enduring the smell, the man finally left. When housekeeping came to clean the room, they lifted the matress and discovered a body that was in an advanced stage of decomposition! Dead bodies are usually hidden in the box springs or under the bed, apparently, and guests sleep on the beds not knowing this!
